Laurie & Saje - Blackcomb Mtn. June 2000

Some questions you should ask when booking a dog sled trip: (and our answers)

What medical training or services are in place? Laurie has over twenty- five years experience as a level three first aid attendant and all guides are required to have at minimum wilderness first aid certificates.

What experience do your guides have?  Laurie & Tom both grew up spending a lot of time in the backwoods, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, hiking and fire fighting. We have been mushing since 1991, raced competitively with carts from 1995-1999, have worked on seven film projects and taught actors, stunt personnel and many others how to safely handle a dog team. All other guides are required to have diplomas in Outdoor Recreation or extensive experience in dog sledding

How much are your guests involved in these tours?  We encourage our guests to be as involved as they wish, but their participation in hook up is not mandatory.

What kind of dogs do you use?  Nakitsilik runs exclusively with purebred Siberian Huskies.

How well are the dogs socialized?  Is it safe for me to have my children around them?  Our dogs are very well socialized and love children - although they do not get to play with them very often so can be a bit rough when they do.  We discourage small children from playing in and around the dogs - especially when harnessing up - due to their exuberance - we just don't want anything to happen to either the children or our dogs. We insist that children be supervised at all times by their parents when on our tours.

Do you ever have dog fights?  All teams have dog fights if the conditions are right.  We have been working very hard to eliminate fighting and very rarely have fights.

Do I need to be experienced to take your tours?  No experience is necessary. Good health and average physical ability are all that is required. Our tours are hands on and we give you sled handling instructions prior to hook up - as you will be handling your own team of dogs.

Do you have insurance?  Yes.  We also require that all customers read and sign a liability  waiver. Non compliance with signatures on the waiver ensures NO trip will be taken.  We do our best to minimize the risks and make our tours as enjoyable as possible, however, accidents can occur.

What types of clothing/gear should I bring?  Due to the ever changing weather patterns at higher elevations, you must be prepared for everything. Layering is critical and we recommend good quality winter gear. Long-johns, fleece and a windproof outer layer are all that are usually required. Warm dry boots, hats, mitts & goggles or sunglasses are a must. Absolutely NO jeans! And don't forget your camera! We stop for lots of photo ops and you are welcome to bring your cameras and video recorders as well.
