Nakitsilik Teams racing - January 2007
Summer 2007 I have been asked by several folks why I don't do a lot of advertising on our website for the films we have done. As always, in every production we have worked in - I have respected the wishes of the production company.. and so therefore do not broadly announce that our dogs were involved. I do not now and never have used our participation in films as a tool to market the sale of pups - unlike several kennels that profess to be above board and are really nothing but puppy mills and use the sale of one or two of their dogs to a production company as a reason to breed and sell more puppies. While we have never supplied or sold puppies or adult dogs to a production - we have always been involved in supplying teams of adults, equipment, safety training, assisted with animal training and been responsible for training the 'character or hero' dogs to work in harness. I have been able to supply mushers, and been a mushing consultant on every film we have worked in. As those who know me are aware - I get pretty bummed out by the puppy mills using the films to promote themselves, while we work very hard and diligently doing breed rescue, education and in supplying quality teams and training and respect the directives of the production. Until next time - happy trails!
March 2007: Over the last few weeks we have been in Vancouver filming the Keystone/Disney film "Snow Buddies". The storyline is based on the successful "Air Bud" franchise. In this latest installment - the air buddies 'babies' get lost in Alaska and help out a husky puppy and his boy owner. There is a lot of mushing for the four adult character dog teams - for which we supplied all the teams, sleds, gear and Laurie was hired on as the Dog-sledding coordinator. Which means a lot less sleep and a lot more responsibility!
Laurie & Devon discussing training techniques - Mt Seymour Pictures from the set of Snow Buddies:
comments from the set of "Snow Buddies" " I was a little unsure of how things would be when we agreed to come and do this movie project - until I saw how you handled the dogs and their care. I have been impressed with what a class act you are. I couldn't be happier that our dogs have ended up at your kennel and in your care. Thank you, Laurie." Vicki deCoffe, Armstrong, BC, White Valley Racing kennels (retired) and mom to mushing double, Josh deCoffe. "I have been continually amazed at the endurance and energy of your dogs. Your vigilance and education of the public to dog teams and the sport in general is to be commended. Your dogs love of their work and the care you take with them is obvious. I am so impressed that I am definitely coming up to visit you next winter for my own dogsledding experience." Chris Obonsawin - American Humane Association - Film Unit - "Snow Buddies" production - February & March 2007.
